ELECTRICAL DESIGN GROUP

LIGHTING

Lighting forms a major component of the Electrical Design Groups commissions. As the most visible feature of our work we are often referred to as specialist lighting engineers.

Even though we have completed projects where the lighting is a grand feature in itself, we are of the belief that lighting design is not about creating a monument to the designer. For example, when we are engaged to design the lighting for a shoe store we believe we have really been engaged to provide a lighting solution that will ultimately sell more shoes. The goal of lighting in a shoe store, is not to sell a lighting design but to sell more shoes.

EDG believes the use of the space is the driving criteria behind all good lighting design. In more subtle examples such as gaming rooms and bars the lighting must look good, but must not distract patrons from their primary purpose in being in that environment.

Therefore lighting must fulfil two objectives: the functional and the aesthetic.  These two requirements will be different for each project depending on the use of the space, the target market, and the balance between practical and creative lighting that is struck by collaboration with the client.

Whilst lighting is an area where creativity is possible, there are other factors for consideration when designing lighting. Emergency and evacuation lighting is a significant requirement in modern projects, and there is an ever increasing awareness and desire for energy efficiency in both installation and maintenance of lighting.

EDG is conscious of all areas of need when designing a lighting installation and can provide a solution that meets the client’s functional needs, aesthetic tastes, safety requirements and energy efficiency preferences
